Business Signage

Grabbing the attention of your customer is important. Investing in large, electronic signs are one way to do this. Some signs are very tall. Others have high-end graphics built into them. These signs may work to lure in your customers, but do they add a new risk to your company?

Your commercial property insurance policy can often provide financial protection for signage. However, you should the limits of this protection.

What Coverage Is Available?

Most commercial property insurance plans offer a basic level of signage coverage. Read your plan to know the specifics. It will likely provide coverage for issues such as:

  • Fire
  • Theft
  • Vandalism
  • Storm Damage

Be sure to tell your business insurance agent about the types of signs you have on your property. He or she should include these in your policy. If you upgrade mid-policy, update your coverage to reflect this. There are a few reasons why this is important.

What's the Value of Your Sign?

Placing a large billboard-like sign or even a smaller, high-end sign on your property can be a great move for attracting consumer attention. But, it is important to estimate the value of your signage, in the event things go wrong.

  • If damaged, how much will it cost to repair? How much will replacing it cost?
  • Does it require specialized equipment for repairs, such as cranes or lifts?
  • What is the value of purchasing a new version if lost?

Once you know the worth of your signage, consider your current policy. Commercial property insurance plans provide a specific amount of coverage per claim. There is most likely a limit. If you exceed the limit, you may not be able to pay for the repairs necessary.

How to Avoid Limits

Speak to your business insurance agent to request an additional rider or add-on policy. This policy may be able to add more coverage for the sign specifically. While meeting with your agent, be sure to discuss liability risks with your new sign. Does it provide injury concerns for the people installing or updating it? Could it be a concern in regards to electrocution? The more information you know, the better your agent can help you.

You need to have ample coverage to protect your signage. Update your policy to reflect this. Keep it updated annually. Such a large investment warrants a bit of additional attention to ensure your business does not suffer a significant loss if an accident occurs.
